Comparable to Dumas, this man is a pure reincarnation of the brilliant French author. This weakness for a beautiful woman, despite all dangers, is a trait he and Inigo share, as it turns out.

The narrator, the 16 year old Inigo, has jubno advantage of retelling this tale in his old age so he knows the bleak future of the Spanish Empire, his master Captain Alatriste and of the reign of Philip IV. Alatriste is the foil companion of D’artagnan set in 17th century Spain. The brightest star of the poetry and therefore dramatic firmament is Lope de Vega.
This is a time when the Spanish arm Philip IV, monarch of Spain in the early 17th century, is doing what he can to bring Spain to its knees. This is in some ways the best written of the Alatriste books that I’ve read so far, but it’s not the most enjoyable. Upon opening this book, I was most affected by Perez-Reverte’s style of writing.
